In 2015, Humanity First took a leap of faith on a country many of us could hardly locate on the map. Ten years later, that leap has evolved into a living, breathing legacy of healing that now spans from Central America to West Africa and East Africa.

Participating in the Walk–Run–Bike (WRB) Challenge as part of the HF Healthcare team this year was a first for many of us, and from the very beginning it felt bigger than just a fitness activity. There was a strong sense that we were part of something larger. It was not only about our own steps or rides, but about adding miles to a collective effort for humanity. Being part of a global movement, where every individual contribution counted, gave the challenge a deeper meaning.
That sense of purpose showed up most clearly on the difficult days. There were many mornings when the motivation was low and, on any normal day, it would have been easy to skip a workout. But the structure of the challenge made a difference. We knew that missing a walk or a run meant missing out on contributing to the team’s total miles. That responsibility towards the group and the cause helped build consistency. It was no longer just a personal choice, it felt like a shared commitment.
As part of the challenge, we were not limited to just walking, running, or cycling. Miles were added through a variety of activities including volleyball, badminton, table tennis, cricket, basketball, yoga, and skating. This made it more inclusive and easier for everyone to stay engaged in a way that suited their routine, while still contributing to the same collective goal.
Taking on the role of a team captain added another layer to this experience. At the start, there was hesitation. Reaching out to people, forming a team, and keeping everyone engaged felt challenging. But as the days passed, the group dynamic became stronger. Encouragement, regular check-ins, and shared progress kept everyone going. What began as uncertainty turned into a very empowering experience. As soon as the first day of the challenge ended and everyone shared their miles and shared their experience, the motivation levels kept on building and it started feeling like a success early on.
The energy within the groups was one of the most noticeable parts of WRB. People from different routines and fitness levels came together
and supported each other. Group activities, whether walking or cycling, made the process enjoyable. It created a sense of teamwork that is not easy to build otherwise.
For many participants, the challenge helped build or restart healthy habits. Some found themselves pushing beyond their usual routines, like walking to work on top of the daily walks, or cycling to work instead of taking a car or rickshaw.
Others became more consistent with exercise. One participant shared how it motivated her to stay active and made her feel satisfied knowing her effort contributed to a meaningful cause. Another found the challenge engaging and helpful in improving her physical fitness which she had long ignored..
There were also impacts beyond individual participants. In some homes, children returned to cycling after a long break. What had stopped due to school workload or other reasons became part of their daily routine again. In one case, children began cycling to the mosque regularly, and their enthusiasm carried on throughout the day. Even after the challenge, some participants continued running and staying active, showing that the habits built during WRB lasted beyond it.
One moment that stood out was explaining the challenge to someone outside the group and realizing how unique it was. The idea that everyday activity could contribute to serving humanity, even from home, highlighted the value of being part of a like-minded community.
Overall, the WRB Challenge brought together purpose, teamwork, and consistency. It showed that when people work towards a shared goal, even small daily efforts can add up to something meaningful. For a first experience, it set a strong foundation and created motivation to be part of similar efforts in the future.

Vision Bridge emerged in partnership between Loyola Medicine Ophthalmology & HF Healthcare Services and is built on a simple but powerful belief: lasting impact comes from empowering communities, not just serving them.
Instead of one-time interventions, the program focuses on:
● Training and mentoring local healthcare professionals
● Strengthening clinical systems and infrastructure
● Sharing skills, knowledge, and best practices
● Creating pathways for continuous, independent care
It is a bridge, a shift from dependency to self-sufficiency, from temporary relief to lasting change.

At Nasir Hospital, every restored vision tells a story. Some start out feeling scared and uncertain, but they end up with something powerful.

During our recent Vision Bridge mission from February 21 to 28, we witnessed such a transformation through the journey of nine-year-old Genesis Díaz.

Surviving in a World of Blurs

Genesis lived in a world she could barely see for two years. 

Her vision was so poor from birth due to congenital bilateral cataracts that she could only distinguish fingers ten centimeters away from her face. Genesis saw faces as shapes, classrooms as shadows, and the colorful details of childhood just out of reach.

Simple things that many kids take for granted, like reading a school board, identifying a friend across the room, and observing the passing scenery, were extremely challenging.

Her family watched helplessly as their bright and curious daughter struggled to fully engage with the world.

A Family’s Hope

Determined to help their daughter see again, Genesis’s family looked for solutions. Their journey eventually led them to Nasir Hospital and the dedicated team leading our Vision Bridge mission.

For her family, the upcoming surgery was more than a medical appointment. It was a moment filled with hope, courage, and the possibility that their daughter might finally see the world clearly.

The Moment Everything Changed

On February 23, 2026, our surgeons performed bilateral cataract surgery.

The procedure was a success.

The true miracle was when Genesis started to see.

Day by day, clarity returned. The world that once appeared as shadows began to sharpen into colors, shapes, and faces. With each passing moment, Genesis discovered something new: details she had never seen before.

Her smile conveyed everything.

A New Beginning

Today, March 9, Genesis returns to school.

As she walks into her classroom, she isn’t just carrying her backpack; she’s carrying a newfound confidence and a world of color she once thought was lost. 

The “Vision Bridge” has been crossed, and the path ahead is finally in focus. For Genesis, the world is no longer a collection of blurred shapes; it is a canvas of endless possibility, waiting for her to make her mark.

If you walk through our halls today, you may notice a new painting hanging quietly on the wall. It is a simple night scene of Nasir Hospital—calm, softly lit, and steady. But behind this canvas lies a story of fear, hope, and gratitude that words alone could never fully capture.
The artwork was hand-painted by a father. It reflects a chapter of his life marked by uncertainty and long nights when his newborn son remained in intensive care, and the Nasir Hospital healthcare team worked tirelessly to save what he cherished most.

If you were to walk through the halls of Nasir Hospital today, you would see that the true foundation of this building isn’t just concrete and steel, it is built on a legacy of profound collective sacrifice.

The miracle of our work is fueled by a beautiful, diverse community of supporters. We are sustained by the major philanthropist who contributes millions to build a new wing, but we are equally moved by the child who offers five dollars of their own pocket money with a sincere heart to help a stranger across the ocean.

Whether it is a gift of millions or a handful of coins, these contributions are more than just financial resources; they are acts of love from hundreds of thousands of individuals who step forward every time a fellow human being is in need. This journey is as much about the spirit of the giver as it is about the recovery of the patient.

At HF Healthcare, we believe that to truly honor these sacrifices, we must be wise stewards of every gift. Our strategy is built on a radical belief: Capital investment must be paired with operational sustainability. 

We don’t just build a facility and move on; we create self-sustaining healthcare ecosystems. By ensuring our hospitals generate the revenue needed to maintain themselves, we multiply our impact. This model allows us to transition from a single successful project into a scalable network of care. Without this focus on long-term viability, expansion would remain stagnant; with it, we can bring hope to entire continents.

By 2025, Nasir Hospital was providing over $170,000 in charity care to 5,500 underprivileged patients. This success gave us the confidence and the capital to look toward the horizon.

At present, HF Healthcare has successfully attended to over 84,000 patients and performed over 1,700 surgeries, with one-quarter of these services dedicated to underprivileged individuals in need.

While the need for quality medical care is a global reality, our ability to provide a lasting “Nasir” (helper) depends on a strategic and disciplined approach. We don’t just build for today, we build for generations.

To ensure every project transforms from a “leap of faith” into a self-sustaining legacy of hope, healing, and humanity, our growth is guided by three criteria.

1. Local Leadership

We believe that the most successful projects are rooted in the community. The initial spark for expansion typically originates from local teams who demonstrate the passion, initiative, and “on-the-ground” expertise required to spearhead large-scale healthcare initiatives. We prioritize regions where there is a dedicated leadership team ready to take ownership of the mission from day one.

2. Need-Based Analysis

Upon receiving a proposal, our team conducts a rigorous, data-driven assessment of the region’s healthcare landscape. We ask the critical question: Does this community lack access to essential, life-saving medical services? We go where the need is greatest, targeting areas where our presence won’t just add a building, but will bridge a critical gap in human survival and wellbeing.

3. Long-Term Sustainability

A hospital that cannot sustain itself eventually ceases to serve. Beyond the immediate need, we evaluate the feasibility of our unique hybrid business model. A country is prioritized only if we can envision a path toward a high-quality, affordable system that can eventually stand on its own. This commitment to viability ensures that our donors’ contributions are multiplied and that our promise of care remains unbroken for decades to come.

By adhering to these principles, HF Healthcare has successfully transitioned from a single success in Guatemala to a scalable network of mercy across Africa and beyond. Our strategic focus ensures that every new foundation stone we lay is the start of a permanent chapter in our global journey of service.

In the quiet moments before the doors of Nasir Hospital first opened in Guatemala, the name chosen for the institution was more than just a label, it was a promise. In Arabic, Nasir means “The Helper,” but within the walls of HF Healthcare, that definition has evolved into a living, breathing testament to faith and human service.

Every time a local resident asked what the name meant, the staff would explain that it symbolized a helper, a reminder that they were not alone. It became a beacon of hope, healing, and humanity.  

The true meaning of “The Helper” is best seen in the hospital’s waiting rooms. In a society where the divide between the wealthy and the poor can feel like a canyon, Nasir Hospital chose a radical path.

HF Healthcare instituted a policy of absolute dignity that the staff are never told which patients can pay and which are receiving full financial assistance. By removing these labels, the hospital acts as a “Nasir” to the human spirit. It helps by restoring the dignity that poverty often strips away, ensuring that every patient, regardless of their background, is treated as a cherished member of an extended family.

The story of Nasir is written in the lives of those it has touched:

• It is the 81-year-old father with dementia who, though medically recovered, had no family to claim him. Instead of a discharge to the streets, the “Helper” provided a month of warm meals and safety until his relatives were found.
• It is the former colleague facing breast cancer who was welcomed back not as a liability, but as a sister, receiving the highest quality care without the burden of cost.
• It is the two five-year-old children, the first ever born at the hospital, who recently stood on the ground of the new inpatient block with shovels in hand, living proof that the “Helper” is building a future for the next generation.

For HF Healthcare, being a “Nasir” means being a constant, reliable presence in a volatile world. It is the belief that every life is a permanent chapter in a journey of love, and that as long as there is a need, there will be a helper ready to answer the call.
